The Green Ghana Day, initiated by H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo in 2021, is a key part of Ghana’s afforestation and reforestation strategy, with a goal to restore the nation’s forest cover and combat global climate change. The inaugural event in June 2021 saw 7 million tree seedlings planted, followed by 26 million in 2022, bringing the total to around 33 million trees with survival rates of 67% and 72% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The government aims to plant 100 million trees by 2024.
On June 9, 2023, the Green Ghana Day continued in the North Tongu District, engaging communities, stakeholders, and government representatives in tree planting to emphasize the importance of forest conservation. The theme, “Our Forests, Our Health,” aimed to plant at least 10 million tree seedlings nationwide. This event, organized by the District Assembly in collaboration with government agencies and local organizations, involved diverse participants and featured the planting of approximately 3,590 tree seedlings, including various indigenous and exotic species, enhancing the local ecosystem’s biodiversity. Participants were provided with tools like shovels and watering cans for the planting process.
