The Deputy Director-General of Ghana's National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Seji Saji Amedonu, highlighted collaborative efforts between NADMO, the Volta River Authority (VRA), and stakeholders to enhance Ghana's readiness for disasters. They drew on lessons from responding to the Akosombo dam spillage, which impacted communities downstream, affecting around 39,000 people, with nearly half being children. Mr. Amedonu emphasized the need for coordinated disaster management efforts in light of recent events. Despite challenges posed by the dam spillage and other factors like heavy rains and dam releases from Burkina Faso, NADMO and VRA's preparedness measures prevented loss of human life. The After-Action Review held in the Volta region aimed to assess response effectiveness and identify areas for improvement, including emergency protocols, resource mobilization, and communication strategies. Mr. Edward Obeng-Kenzo, Deputy CEO of VRA, stressed the importance of honest evaluation and commitment to enhancing response mechanisms, including technology integration and communication strategies, to better serve communities during emergencies.
