The North Tongu District Assembly exercised its Constitutional right of selecting a Presiding Member (PM) for the newly elected and inaugurated Assembly Members on the 31st of January, 2020 at the District Assembly Hall. Though the Presiding Member should have been elected on the day of the inauguration, it was required by law that the Ag. Presiding Member, announce the voting to be rescheduled since none of the aspirants had 2/3 of the total valid votes cast.
Contestants for the position of the Presiding Member were Hon Mawuli Vorsah and Hon. Emmanuel Amekah. The Electoral Commission led by Mr. Bansah Sammy Olando explained to the members that new filings for the position will only be allowed if neither of the two aspirants secures 2/3 of the total valid votes cast for the second round of election.
Unfortunately, after the voting was completed, none of the aspirants attained 2/3 of the total valid votes cast with each getting 21 votes each. The Electoral Commissioner, asked the members to step aside and called for the filling of new nominations.
Hon. Togbe Kwasi Hottor was nominated unopposed and won the position with a “Yes or No” vote getting 38 “Yes” votes out of 42 votes cast. However, the elected Presiding Member could not be sworn in due to the absence of a Circuit or High Court Judge. The swearing in was rescheduled to a later date.
The elected PM addressed the house and entreated them to be united and cooperate towards the development of the district.
The house then proceeded to form sub-committees consisting of five Assembly Members each.
